How to open Paypal business Account in Nigeria

Paypal is an online payment platform. It was created in 1998, with its headquarter in California, USA. It is now the world’s leading payment gateway with over 200 million active users in over 200 countries and 25 currencies across the globe.

Paypal placed a total ban on Nigerian accounts some years back, due to what she called fraudulent activities. It became challenging to do business online in Nigeria. In 2014, the restriction was partially lifted. Nigerians were allowed to make payments but unable to receive money.

Currently, the restriction has been further eased up. Now, Nigerian owned paypal business account can now send and receive money. Note that this is only applicable to business accounts and not individual accounts. Personal account of Nigerian origin can only send money but cannot receive.

In this article, I will show you how to successfully open a paypal business account in Nigeria.

Step by step guide on how to create Paypal Business account

  1. Go to on your browser. This will take you to a simple and well designed paypal homepage.
  2. On the homepage, you will see “signup for free”. Below that, you will see “ own a business? Open a business account “. Click on the latter.
  3. It will take you to the next page, with “get started” as its heading. Here, you will be required to input your active email (emphasis on active).
  4. You will be taking to the sign up page, where you will be required to enter your password, name, business name and so on. When you are through, check the agreement policy box and click “agree and continue “
  5. On the next page, you will be required to supply information about your business and click “continue “ afterwards.
  6. The next page will require you to provide more information about yourself.
  7. Here you will be required to provide more information about your organization.
  8. Finally, certify and submit page. This is to confirm that all the information you provided are true.
  9. Go to your email and confirm the link sent to you by paypal and follow the instructions.

You are almost through. But this your new account cannot receive money yet. At this point, anyone that attempts to send you money will be greeted with this error message, “this recipient accepts paypal payment only through their website. To complete this payment, please go to their website and follow their instructions, or email the recipient for instructions”.

The solution is to link your debit card to your  new business account. You can link more than one card if you so choose.

How to link your account

  1. Login to your internet banking account using your password and token
  2. Choose paypal wallet on the tab and choose “create paypal wallet on the drop down menu.
  3. Select the card you wish to link
  4. Press the button on your token and confirm accordingly.
  5. Create password in the pop up window that comes up.
  6. Agree and create account.
  7. Go to your email and confirm the email sent by the bank, which confirms that you have created paypal account.
  8. Your Paypal account is working
